About the campaign

Our nation has laws that ensure children can get a quality education, access health care services, and be protected from abuse. But those laws are leaving millions of children behind: homeschooled children. 

It’s time for that to change.

This June, we’ve set a goal to raise $3,000 in one-time gifts and $200 in additional monthly donations.  These funds will help continue our singular work to make homeschool safe — and stay tuned as we roll out a brand-new way to do just that later this month.

The law is leaving homeschooled children behind

Most people assume that homeschooling has a reasonable amount of oversight. But unfortunately, that’s not true. Lax homeschool laws in all 50 states make it easy for parents to use homeschooling to isolate, neglect, and abuse children. 

What do these laws look like? Here’s a quick glimpse:

  • 47 states allow convicted sex offenders and child abusers to homeschool
  • 49 states don’t require parents to make a plan to homeschool their child
  • 14 states don’t require parents to teach their homeschooled child any specific school subjects
  • 11 states don’t require parents to report that they’re homeschooling their child

The stakes here – a child’s education, safety, and future – are too high to leave them up to the luck of the draw.

Let’s be clear: Many families raise their children with care and work hard to give them a good homeschool experience. But that’s not the case for every child. And the stakes here – a child’s education, safety, and future – are too high to leave them up to the luck of the draw. That’s why we need laws designed to protect every homeschooled child’s rights and wellbeing.

Change the law, change our lives

The harm of lax homeschool laws isn’t hypothetical. Generations of homeschool survivors are speaking up about what happened to them, and what needs to change to make homeschool safe for children.
