Help for Educators During COVID-19 School Closures

We are a national nonprofit child advocacy organization that focuses on homeschooling. We do education research as well as advocacy, and have created a white paper aimed at helping teachers and administrators grappling with distance learning and school closures. 

We centered our white paper on a simple question: How can research on homeschooling and online learning assist educators working to implement distance learning due to COVID-19 school closures? We came up with a number of answers, including: 

• Students who are educated in the home experience a ‘math gap’ whether they are enrolled in online programs or homeschooled independently.
• A growing body of research suggests that students educated via online learning or distance education may actually see the racial and economic achievement gap narrow, despite declines in growth for some or all groups.
• Online instruction is not an adequate replacement for in-person instruction; synchronous learning experiences are crucial. 
• Distance learning programs that involve a high level of parental involvement and input tend to be the most successful. 

In our white paper, we analyze a variety of evidence on distance learning and child well-being and offer a variety of evidence-based recommendations for educators.
